UPDATED
This article has been updated and all prompts rerun using the newest model, Nano Banana Pro.
Gemini 2.5 Flash has been getting a lot of hype for its image editing capabilities and perhaps deservedly so. We’ve decided to create a few particularly tricky image edits to see how well it performs.
All experiments were conducted using Gemini Flash 2.5 (now Gemini 3.0 Pro) through text prompts to adjust existing images. Drag the sliders on the images to see the “before” and “after” results.

Fill out the white section by guessing what the photographer is taking a photo of. Do not alter the scenery - instead extend it.
A fascinating test of NanoBanana’s ability to understand context and extrapolate details that aren’t visible in the original image. The AI had to interpret what might be in the photographer’s viewfinder. Since NanoBanana struggles with producing an image in a radically different aspect ratio from the source, we had to first extend the canvas of the original image before running the edit which is what the white area represents.
Jigsaw Puzzle

Re-arrange the jigsaw puzzle pieces to complete the image.Passing this test is an almost astonishing feat given that this particular puzzle occurs nowhere in the training data - it was custom created for a relatively recent animated puzzle game. Is it perfect? No, if you pay attention to the extrusions of the original pieces you can see that the AI did not incorporate the original shapes perfectly. However, it did correctly identify the image on the puzzle and rearranged the pieces to form a coherent picture.

Change the shorts into a pair of full-length jeans.
This test challenges the AI’s understanding of human anatomy and clothing physics. Nano Banana, Kontext, etc. excel at the ability to add, remove and modify clothing paper doll style to fit the training data of a person with all their limbs intact.
The original Nano Banana failed this test - it simply regrew the missing leg, which would be an impressive feat for medical engineering but not what we were looking for. However, Nano Banana Pro passed with flying colors, correctly extending the jeans on the existing leg while respecting the subject’s anatomy.

Create 3d visualizations for these maps.
This test examines the AI’s ability to interpret and enhance geographical data. The original image contains a few standard contour-based topographical maps which the AI was tasked with converting into 3D visualizations.

Make this business meeting more racially inclusive.
This was more a light-hearted test to suss out what “racially diverse” means to Google’s state of the art model.

Replace the window with a mirror that correctly reflects the room. While there are some minor discrepancies in the reflection with some things not being reversed quite right, this is still a highly impressive feat considering all the complex geometry around the furniture in the room. It even removed the glare from the outside light source on the small wooden table in front of the couch.
